Lady Dawgs Take Third Place In LCL

by Tina Ratcliff

January 31, 2008

The Madison Lady Dawgs entered tournament play seated fourth, but they came out fighting and defeated the Lebo Lady Wolves on Saturday to take third place in this year’s Lyon County League Tournament.

They started out last Tuesday night against the Chase County Lady Bulldogs in a fight to see who would play the winner of the Olpe Eagles vs. Hartford Jaguars game.  The two teams began the night fairly matched and left the first quarter’s score at 11-6, in Madison’s favor.  As the game progressed, Madison continued to outscore them in every way and racked up another 39 points in addition to the first quarter’s 11 to leave the game with an easy Madison victory of 50-30 against the Chase County Bulldogs.  This win would place Madison in Friday night’s semi-finals against the Olpe Lady Eagles to see who would advance to the championship game on Saturday.

Shelby Buster led Madison in points with 23 and 8 rebounds.  Morgan Stout followed with 12 points, Tera Titus and Chelcie Schankie had 4 points apiece, and Victoria Dean, Jennifer Finch, and Misty Waggoner wrapped it up with 2 points each.

As Friday approached, the Lady Dawgs prepared to take on northern rivals, the Lady Olpe Eagles for the second time this year.  As the game began, Madison and Olpe both fought for the lead with the score staying at 4-4 for awhile before Olpe pulled out and left it 10-4 to start the second quarter.  Madison came out quick and brought the score to within 1 point of the Eagles at 10-9 in Olpe’s favor before the Lady Eagles surged ahead once more to finish the first half with a score of 21-10.  The third and fourth quarters showed a defeated Madison team that allowed Olpe to take complete control and score 24 points to the Lady Dawgs 11 points, ending the game and allowing Olpe to move into the championship game with the score of 45-21.

Buster led again in points with 7, in addition to 7 rebounds and 5 blocks.  Stout had 6 points, Danielle Bond had 4 points, Abby Kile put up 3 points, and Titus finished it out with 1 point.

Madison returned Saturday to take on another rival, the Lebo Lady Wolves, to see who would leave the tournament with the third place medals.  Madison came out fast and played well as a team as they scored 15 points to Lebo’s 5.  The next quarter showed Lebo playing a little catch up, but still failing to take the lead from Madison, leaving the score 24-16 going into the second half.  Madison continued to shoot well and put up another 22 points in the third quarter to the Lebo Lady Wolves’ 13.  Madison continued to play well as a team and finished the fourth quarter ahead of Lebo, winning the game with a score of 57-42.

Stout led in points with 25, followed closely by Buster with 23 points and 15 rebounds.  Titus contributed 5 points and 5 rebounds, with Kile and Schankie each throwing in 2 points.

Congratulations Lady Dawgs on a fine tournament and good luck with the remainder of the season.  Also, thank you to all the parents and fans who showed outstanding support throughout the whole week.

Madison plays Tuesday night at home against Wichita Home School and Friday night in Topeka against Cair Paravel.
